Yang Kum Demby
April 4, 1936 – July 16, 2021
Yang Kum Demby passed away peacefully on July 16, 2021 at Deaconess Hospital. Yang is survived by her daughter Kim Demby, Kim’s husband Will Cate and Karen Demby of California. Also her sister Yang Ja, son Jo Lee, grandchildren, and friends.
Yang was born in South Korea, but spent most of her life as a mom and wife in Spokane. She was very strong, smart, happy in her home and enjoyed her life. She was known for making delicious kimchi and could often be seen outside taking care of her yard. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Ernest Demby at Pines cemetery in Spokane, Washington.
It’s impossible to describe a person and their life in so few words, but those who knew Yang will have their own memories and stories about her. Here are some of them.
“My mom lived with us for the remaining years of her life and although it wasn’t always easy, I believe taking care of her was what I was meant to do. I loved making her laugh. That was something she did until the end. My mom lived a very good life and I am so fortunate to have spent so many years with her. Mom, I love you and miss you” ~Your “big daughter” Kim
“A loving grandmother who always took care of us. Making sure we always ate, and she did too. There was always somewhere for us to sleep because [she would say] there was plenty of room next to her” ~Jada
“I loved my grandma more than anything. All of my friends loved her, too. She took care of me growing up and shaped me into who I am today. I’ll love you, grandma, forever and always” ~Deon
“She was a loving grandma. The world was a great place with you here and I am sure you will continue to bring joy and happiness beyond the grave. I’ll miss you” ~Maya
A graveside service is scheduled for 12:30 pm on Friday, July 23 at Pines Cemetery, 1402 S Pines Rd in Spokane Valley. Professional services conducted by Thornhill Valley Chapel.
