Arthur Jacob Smith

He was born in the Town of Brooklyn on July 20, 1927 to parents Dean and Della (Smith) Smith. He attended the Taft School, and was married to Barbara Godfrey on January 31, 1948. He then moved to St. Paul, MN, and worked for about 5 months before moving back to Wisconsin where he farmed with his dad for one summer. He then moved to Chicago, to Austin, MN in July of 1949, where he worked construction and worked as a custodian at the High School. On January 10, 1951, he was hired at the G.A. Hormel Company where he worked in the smokehouse. On October 11, 1975, he was united in marriage to Darlene Syring in Marshfield, WI. He continued to work at Hormel until his retirement on August 31, 1985, at which time he moved back to the Town of Brooklyn. Art served several different terms as a Town Supervisor for Brooklyn Township, and also was an LTE at the Spooner hatchery for 12 summers. Art was a member of the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Spooner, and also the Trinity Lutheran Church in Marshfield for the past year. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time in the great outdoors, raising chickens each summer, and was always proud of the huge garden he had.

Art is survived by his wife Darlene, son Gary D. (Mary Ann) Smith of Sugar Grove, IL, daughters: Nancy (Joe) Von Ruden of Owatonna, MN, Diana Allen of Charleston, SC, Valerie (Osha) Adegunleye of Bowie, MD, sisters: Ethel (Wilfred) Sandridge of New Glarus, WI, Mary Lou (Paul) Ryan of New Glarus, WI, Fran (Kenneth) Zimmerman of New Glarus, WI, and brother Raymond (Gurine) Smith of Trego, WI, 10 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Art is preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara, son Eric A. Smith, sister Betty Schmidt, brothers: Albert and Elmer Smith, grandson Matthew Smith, and son in law David Allen.

Funeral services for Arthur Smith will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014, at 11am, at the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church near Spooner with Pastors Gene Jahnke and Jon Gunther officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014, from 10-11am at the Church. Interment will follow at the Earl Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Kevin, Ron, Randy, Ray, Rodney, and Steve Smith.
