DeWayne "Doc" Olson

DeWayne Charles “Doc” Olson, 85, a longtime resident of Madge Township, died on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at his residence in Spooner. DeWayne Charles Olson was born on April 1, 1927 in Rice Lake, WI to parents, Alvin and Myrtle (Swacina) Olson. When he was 11 years old, he became a resident of Madge Township in Washburn County where he spent most of his life. He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps on March 12, 1945 and was honorably discharged on September 3, 1949. On March 22, 1952, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Lou Todd in Pine City, MN. The couple resided in Madge Township throughout their marriage. Doc worked on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 38 years. He received his 50th year merit pin from the BMWE Union on March 7, 2003. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed sponsoring worldwide Children Funds, the Lion’s Club Christmas Fund, and the Washburn County Food Pantry. Doc and Evelyn loved to play golf and he was a member of the Butternut Hills Men’s Golf League. He also liked to hunt and fish with his wife, and liked to do a little gambling now and then. The couple celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2002 and he got a “Hole in One” in August of 2005 at Butternut Hills. Doc is survived by his children, William (Barb) Olson of Sarona, WI, Kay (Mike Eder) Patterson of Turtle Lake, WI and Ron (Jean Marie Jeska) Olson of Champlain, MN; grandchildren, Melanie, DeWayne, Shannon, Travis, John and Jesse, great grandchildren, Lauryn, Nicholas, Rebecca, Hunter, and Sophia; brother, Tom (Violet) Olson of Winter, WI; and sisters, Pat (Andy) Nelson of Seattle, WA and Maxine Neubauer of Tacoma, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn, brothers; Sidney and William, and sister Lila. Memorial services for DeWayne “Doc” Olson will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the Dahl Funeral Home in Spooner, WI with Pastor Ronald Gormong officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 – 1:00 pm prior to the service at the Funeral Home. A reception will follow at the Spooner Wesleyan Church Fellowship Hall. Inurnment will take place in the Madge Evergreen Cemetery in the spring. Memorials would be appreciated to either the Washburn County Food Pantry or the Butternut Hills Golf Course in memory of Doc.
