She was born January 13, 1929 to Gust and Jessie Olson in Cumberland, WI. She graduated from Cumberland High School in 1947 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in education from the UW-Superior in 1951.
Dorothy married Lloyd “Doc” Foss on June 23, 1952 in Cumberland, WI. They moved to Thorp, WI, where Dorothy taught school. She worked as a dress model at a department store in New Jersey while Doc completed basic training. She returned to Wisconsin and taught in Gilman while her husband was overseas during the Korean War. The couple moved to St. Paul when Doc returned to the United States. She taught school while Doc attended Veterinary school. They moved to Spooner in 1959 where she helped Doc start his Veterinary practice and raised their three children. She returned to teaching at the Spooner Elementary School where she taught – mostly first grade- for 27 years.
Dorothy had a huge heart, a witty personality that was always ready with a quick comeback and a feisty fighting spirit. She tended beautiful flower gardens, raspberry and strawberry plants that seemed to produce when others wouldn’t. She could throw a ball far and long enough to wear out an energetic slobbering black lab and create a perfect lap for a Springer Spaniel to curl up on. Dorothy had strong, large Swedish hands that could hook up any piece of farm machinery or make the perfect sandwich and iced tea for a picnic in the hayfield.
Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Becky (Art) Stubfors of Red Wing, MN; two sons, Tom (Julie) of Spooner, WI and Tim ((Susan) of Marine on St. Croix, MN; nine grandchildren, David (Sara) Spaulding of Shell Lake, Jennifer (Ty) Prochnow of Springerville, AZ, Charles (Sara) Stubfors of Minneapolis, MN, Jessie Foss of Onalaska, WI, Tom Stubfors (fiancé, Megan) of Fridley, MN, Katie (Ryan) McKinney of Spooner, Ben (Sadie) Foss of Eau Claire, Allison Stubfors (fiancé, Aaron) of Hopkins, MN and Amy Foss of Marine of St. Croix; eight great grandchildren, Marissa, Abigail, Lindsey, Logan, Hayden, Max, Jax and baby boy McKinney due in June; and two sisters, Peg (Larry) Poulter of Duluth, MN, and Edna (Bud) Nesvold of Hartford. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Doc; a sister, Addie; and a brother, Tony.
