

Benedita Vaz, 95, passed away on May 13, 2026. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on August 9, 1930, she carried with her a deep sense of purpose and steadiness throughout a long and meaningful life. In 1949, she came to the United States, beginning a new chapter marked by perseverance and devotion to family and community.
Benedita built a life grounded in hard work and responsibility. She was employed at Uniroyal and later worked at Cadbury, which later became Hershey’s—roles she approached with quiet diligence and reliability.
In 1953, she married John Vaz. She is survived by her five children, Bernadette, Linda, John, James, and Maria, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family remained at the center of her life, a source of enduring pride and care. She also leaves 2 sisters and a brother in Brazil as well and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her loving husband John Vaz and her grandson David Martins.
Benedita found joy in simple beauty, especially in flowers, and she extended that same tenderness to people around her. She helped immigrants from Portugal, Brazil, and Connecticut, offering practical support and a welcoming spirit to those finding their way.
She was active in the Portuguese Community in Naugatuck Connecticut and Hudson, and she volunteered at Catholic charities. Through faithful service and consistent presence, Benedita strengthened the communities she cherished and left a legacy of compassion and steadfast generosity.
