Born in Brooklyn, New York. Gene lived a life defined by loyalty, generosity, and deep devotion to the people he loved.
Gene’s remarkable love story began at age fourteen when he met Bernadette, the woman who would become his lifetime companion. The two married in 1961 and spent more than six decades together, creating a warm and loving home until Bernadette’s passing in 2024. Gene was a dedicated, faithful partner throughout their long and beautiful marriage.
A graduate of Grady High School, Gene served honorably in the US Army, including being recalled during the Berlin Air Crisis a testament to his courage and commitment to his country. He continued his service to others as an NYPD police officer and took a second full time job as an oil burner mechanic. In 1971, Gene and Bernadette moved their young family from Brooklyn to Long Island, giving their children—Teresa, June, and Eugene (aka Buddy)—a life surrounded by opportunity, stability, and laughter. His work ethic and willingness to always lend a hand defined every stage of his life. Whether fixing cars, helping repair a home, or troubleshooting someone’s computer, Gene gladly showed up for anyone who needed him.
In 1996, Gene joyfully became a grandfather—one of the greatest highlights of his life. His heart only grew fuller as more grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived over the years.
In 2001, Gene and Bernadette moved to North Carolina, where they embraced a community centered life with new friends that included spending time boating, golfing and fishing. Their final move to Florida in 2010 allowed them to create an additional circle of friends where they enjoyed attending the many social events in their community, golfing, playing cards and darts. Gene was always a phone call away as the community handyman and tech support. Following Bernadettes passing, Gene found comfort and joy in cooking and birdwatching, new passions that brought him peace.
Gene was known for his generosity—of time, of resources, of humor, and of wisdom. His presence brought comfort, his laughter brought light, and his kindness touched everyone around him. He lived with an open heart and an easy smile, always ready to offer help or share a story. He never met a stranger.
Gene was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Bernadette Nelson.
