Born on April 19, 1942, in New Jersey, George entered the United States Navy following his high school graduation and proudly served his country for 22 years. During his military career, he worked in many areas aboard aircraft carriers, though his primary specialty involved catapult and arresting gear operations on the flight deck. His years of military service carried him and his family to many places throughout the United States and remained one of the proudest parts of his life.
During his naval career and the years that followed, he shared his life with Georgia Ann Meyer (Harwood), with whom he had three children. His final duty station led them to the small town of
Montour Falls in upstate New York, where they remained until his retirement from the United States Navy. He later relocated to Florida, where he began his second career with Pall Aerospace in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area, working in the company’s Calibration Laboratory (“Cal Lab”) and applying the same technical skill and precision that had defined his Navy career until his eventual retirement.
George found his greatest peace outside puttering in the yard and gardening or in his garage workshop building his latest project. Nothing made him laugh harder than watching National
Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation each holiday season. His unmistakable laugh throughout the movie became part of the family’s Christmas memories and brought laughter right along with him.
George especially loved seeing the tradition of military service continue through his children. All three went on to serve their country: Jamie served in the United States Navy, Jodie served in the United States Army, and Jeremy served in the United States Navy, retiring as an officer.
He is preceded in death by his father, George Andrew Meyer; his mother, Anna Meyer (Zemlanski); and Georgia Ann Meyer (Harwood).
George is survived by his wife, Paulette Dulude Meyer; his children, Jamie Meyer Hurst, Jodie Meyer, and Jeremy Scott Meyer (Wendy Meyer); grandchildren, Tyler Hurst, Wyatt Hurst, Kaitlyn Meyer, and
Kyle Meyer; stepchildren, Melissa Dulude and Thomas Dulude; his brother, Andrew Meyer and wife Rosemary; niece, Robin Wilhelm and husband Jared; and great-nephew Mateo Wilhelm.
In accordance with his wishes, no formal services will be held, and cremation arrangements will remain private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in George’s honor
to a veterans' organization of one’s choice.
