Gloria E. Alers

Gloria was born on March 13, 1943 in Patilla, Puerto Rico to Silvano and Gloria Amaro. Gloria married Osvaldo Alers in New Bedford, Massachusetts on April 20, 1963.

Gloria was a talented seamstress who opened and operated two shopfronts, Gloria's Kiddie Shop, where she created beautiful custom made baby bassinet covers and other baby items and next door, she ran La Chiquita Spanish Market. Every day she was up at the crack of dawn preparing her famous budin (Puerto Rican bread pudding) which sold out every day. She sold penny candy and in the afternoons, the store was filled with children running there from school, money in hand. Gloria was an outstanding mother to her only child, Deborah and loved her grandchildren deeply. She was a devoted wife to her husband of 60 years.

Gloria loved Christ and the Lord. She volunteered to clean the church and confided to her husband that she saw Christ appear to her in the church one day while cleaning. Gloria was so talented that she hand-made her daughter's two (yes two, a different one for each prom) prom dresses as well as her wedding gown.

Gloria will be missed by all but will remain in our memories forever.

Her parents, Silvano Amaro and Gloria Amaro preceded Gloria in death. Her brother, Jose Amaro, niece, Evelyn (Amaro) Valler, and nephew, Miguel A Gonzalez Jr. also preceded her in death. Gloria is survived by her husband, Osvaldo Alers; daughter, Deborah Alers-Tavares; son-in-law, Richard Tavares; grandson, Wesley Tavares; granddaughter, Brianna (Tavares) Valerio; sister, Mary (Amaro) Gonzalez; and brothers, Jesus Amaro and Rafael Amaro.

The family would also like to recognize her Pastor, Gary Osborne, as well as the HPH Hospice Care Center.

A Visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:30-1:30pm, Monday, January 29, 2024 at Merritt Funeral Home - Spring Hill, 4095 Mariner Blvd, Spring Hill, FL 34609, where Funeral Services begin at 1:30pm. A Graveside Service will follow at 3:00pm at Florida Hills Memorial Gardens, 14354 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill, FL 34609.
