She was born in Totvazsony, Hungary on November 25th, 1938. She left her home during the Hungarian Revolution in 1958 and lived in Austria and West Germany. In October 1960 she was wed to Andrew Schaner in Germany. They were married for 52 years until his passing in 2012. They resided in the Ridgewood and Glendale areas of Queens, New York and later retired to Spring Hill, Florida.
Katie was predeceased by her parents Istvan and Erzserbet Haman, and sisters Terez Keller and Erzserbet Straub, all of Hungary. She is survived by her son Andrew Schaner, his wife Joan (O'Donoghue) and their son William who reside in Stamford, Connecticut. She is also survived by her son Thomas Schaner who resides in Florida.
In her early career, Katie was a porcelain painting artisan in Germany and Hungary. Her home was filled with Herend porcelain. She later worked in the knitting mill industry and then as a caregiver.
She had a love for animals, including her beloved Shih Tzu, Trixie. Katie enjoyed spending her quiet time reading and used her artistic talents to paint amazing floral still lifes on rocks and bird houses. She enjoyed puttering in her garden and proliferating the flowers that continue to bloom in Spring Hill and at her former Keyser Lake summer home in Little Falls, New York.
During her retirement years, she was an active member of both the Hungarian American and the German American Clubs in Spring Hill.
Katie was a wise and loyal friend. She loved and was loved by her family and friends. She will be dearly missed and will live on in all of the hearts that she touched.
