Lloyd Allen McIntire was born in Lehigh, OK on January 17, 1923 to Clinton and Cleo McIntire, one of four children. He was raised on a farm in Texas. When WWII arrived, he decided to enlist, but was deemed 4F due to his flat feet and color-blindness, so he joined the Merchant Marines. He arrived in St. Petersburg, FL for training where he met and married Gloria Callender. Assigned to ships transporting supplies and ammunition, he was in constant danger on the sea. When honorably discharged, he started his own tile business in St. Petersburg which he ran for a number of years. Meanwhile the family was growing, first Judith Ann, then Susan Lynn, then Stuart Allan, then Michael Forest arrived. Lloyd later became involved in the roofing industry. Wife Gloria died in 1994 and Lloyd subsequently married Marie Iris George. They had a wonderful life together. Lloyd was a friendly, self-educated guy who loved sports and reading. When he still could, he loved to play golf. His favorite college football team, the Florida Gators, constantly disappointed him, but he couldn’t help but continue to pull for the underdogs. Later, Iris and Lloyd lived in an assisted living facility in Merritt Island, FL. Iris passed in 2015 and Lloyd was adrift. His daughter Susan looked after his affairs in his later years, but when she moved to another state in 2019, Lloyd was moved to a care facility in Brooksville, near his son Stuart. He lived there until his body gave out and he died on June 19, 2019 at the ripe old age of 96. Dad had been “ready to go” as he put it for a number of years.
Lloyd will be greatly missed by his remaining family: daughter Judy and her husband Alan Hills of New Bern, NC; daughter Sue and her husband Jim Jolley of Raleigh, NC; son Stu and his significant other Donna of Weeki Wachee, FL; and son Mike and his wife Donna of Fort Myers, FL; as well as five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Lloyd was pre-deceased by his parents, two of his siblings, wife Gloria, wife Iris, and one grandson. After cremation, his remains will be placed with his wife’s Gloria’s ashes at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. The family will gather for a celebration of Lloyd’s life at a later date. “Twilight and evening bell, and after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark…When I have crost the bar.” We love you Dad!
