

Sally “Joan” Buxton Scales, 79, of Spring Hill, (Silverthorn) Florida, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Bayonet Point Hospital. She was born on May 27, 1937, in Bellows Falls, Vermont to the late Alvah and Zoay (Bigelow) Buxton. Sally grew up in Bellows Falls and Saxtons River, VT, attended local schools and graduated from Bellow Falls High School. After graduation, Sally attended the University of Vermont where in 1959 she earned a BA in Education – Single Subjects.
She then worked for a short time in New York and New Haven before marrying former high school boyfriend, Ronald Scales on September 10, 1960. At this point she became the prototypical Army Officer Wife as they fulfilled 20 years of military service in Germany, Japan, the United States, specifically in Alaska, and through his tours in Vietnam. Sally became a mother in 1961 when Brian was born and again in 1963 with the birth of Karen. She spent many hours with various volunteer groups, kid’s events, and the wives clubs during these years, even becoming runner-up to Alaska Military Command Wife of the Year. After retirement from the military life, she worked 21 years for Civil Service in Base Contracting Offices at both Camp LeJeune, NC and Camp Butler in Okinawa, Japan. Sally and her late husband, Ron, retired to Spring Hill from Jacksonville, NC, in 1998.
Sally enjoyed playing bridge with close friends, Red Hat Club, traveling, cats and genealogy. She is also a long standing member of the Order of Eastern Star (Alpha Chapter #53.)
Sally is survived by: her son, Brian Scales and his wife, Amy of Winter Springs, FL; her daughter, Karen Bryant and her husband Wade of Baton Rouge, LA; granddaughter, Erica, a student at Winter Springs HS, FL; grandson, Matthew, a student at Auburn University in Auburn, AL; grandson, Trey an Administrative Fellow at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN; granddaughter, Christina, working on Religious Studies doctorate and her husband, Joshua King, in Clemson, SC, as well as by sister-in-law, Lorraine Scales Eagan, of Waltham, MA.
Visitation for family and friends will be at the Turner Funeral Home, 14360 Spring Hill Drive, on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at 10:00am until time of service at 11:00am. Interment will follow at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society or the charity of one’s choice.
