Helene Wilner (nee Blumberg), a beautiful, spirited and courageous woman, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully Monday morning, after a brief but brave battle with breast cancer. She spent her final days surrounded with love by family and friends.
Helene enjoyed life with a vitality that was contagious. Her family kiddingly called her the "Mayor of North Rockland" because anywhere she went, she met a friend. Especially at the mall. Born in the Bronx in 1951, Helene grew up in Woodside, Queens in an apartment practically on the tracks of the 7 train. She often took that train into Manhattan for anything from a Broadway show to a Rangers game. Helene met her husband, Barry, at one of those games, and they spent 42 blissful years together, producing four wonderful children. Helene and Barry moved to Rockland County in 1977, living in Pomona and then Garnerville.
For the last decade, Helene was a teacher's aide, first in Haverstraw Middle School and then at Fieldstone Middle School _ a job she found both challenging and fulfilling.Helene is survived by her husband Barry; daughters Nicole Perkins (Dan) of Philadelphia; Jamie Haug (Eric) of Newburgh, N.Y.; Tricia LoPresti (Anthony) of Wappingers Falls; and son Evan of Washington, D.C. She also was Bubbie to Will, Julianna and Zoe. Helene was predeceased by her parents, Nathan and Miriam, and her brother, Joel. She will be missed by her many family members and friends. We will honor and celebrate her life on Wednesday, May 11,2016 at 11 a.m. sharp at Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State Street, Spring Valley, N.Y., followed by a burial at Cedar Park/Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, N.J. 07652. Shiva will be observed at the family residence. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society.
