

Joan Magliacano Landzberg, Ed.D, passed away peacefully, and surrounded by her loving family in her Yorktown Heights, NY home, on Thursday, January 15, 2015. She was 79 years old and had resided in Yorktown Heights since 1959. Joan once taught in the Yorktown School District, both as a reading teacher at French Hill Elementary and a Special Education and Resource Room Teacher at Yorktown High School. Following her teaching career, Joan served as a Yorktown Central School District administrator in various capacities; as Supervisor of Special Education, Director of Special Education and Director of Pupil Personnel and Special Education. Joan was still working as an instructional consultant for the Yorktown Central School District until shortly before her death.
Aside from her involvement with Yorktown's schools, Joan was deeply involved with the Yorktown community in many other ways. Joan helped to found the Alliance for Safe Kids (A.S.K.) and she served on the Town of Yorktown Ethics Committee. Joan also served the town as President of the Board of Trustees of the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak.
Joan is survived by her loving husband Abraham (Al) Landzberg, whom she met 63 years ago at a "hootenanny" in the Bronx, where both were born. Joan and Al were married for 59 years. She is also survived by three children and their spouses: Judi Friedman (Laurence) of Bedford Corners, Carol Newman (Chuck) of Yorktown Heights, and Steven Landzberg (Deborah) of Waccabuc, as well as seven grandchildren - Spencer and Oliver Friedman, Lily and Sara Newman and Justin, Charlotte and Lucy Landzberg.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at First Hebrew Congregation of Peekskill, 1821 East Main St., Peekskill, NY. The community may call for Shiva at the home of Carol and Chuck Newman on Sunday evening from 5pm to 9pm and at the home of Steven and Debbie Landzberg on Monday evening from 5pm to 8pm.
