

Joel L. Scheinert of Cliffside Park, New Jersey, and a former 42 year resident of Monsey, NY passed away on Saturday January 4th, 2014 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern NY. He was 76 years old. The son of the late Sidney and Ada (Ocean) Scheinert, Joel was born on February 12th, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a graduate of University of Pennsylvania- Wharton School of Business class of 1957, Harvard Law School class of 1960. He recently retired from his law practice Scheinert and Kobb LLC. Nanuet, NY. While attending University Pennsylvania he met, fell in love, and married the love of his life Edie Scheinert. They shared 53 devoted and happy years of marriage until her death on July 23rd, 2011. During his life time he served his temple, community and country. Joel was a Veteran of the United States Army stationed at Fort Drum. He was a Rockland County legislature from 1974 till 1976. He was a Founding member of the Monsey Jewish Center and Viola Civic Association. He was on the board of Good Samaritan Hospital and Finkelstein Library Association. Joel is Past honoree of Congregation Shaarey Israel formerly Monsey Jewish Center. Joel had a happiness and sense of humor that never left him even in the end. He is survived by his beloved children Howard “Howie” and wife Nancy Moriarty-Scheinert and Phyllis and husband James “Jimmy” Gentile and the joy of his life his grandchildren Randall and his wife Jennifer, Dustin and his wife Randi, John, Kathryn, and Bridget Scheinert, Arra, Christopher, and Samantha Gentile. He is survived by his brother Irwin and wife Barbara Scheinert of Florida and his sister Gloria Luger and sister in-laws and brother in-laws and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends, business associates, and Fraternity brothers (Phi Alpha), and his right hand “gal” and legal secretary and friend Bryna Schoenbart. He was predeceased by his brother in-law Leon Luger. Funeral services will be held on Monday January 6th 2014 at 12:00pm at Chapel of Gates of Zion Cemetery, 670 Saddle River Road, Airmont, NY. Interment will follow at the family plots at Gates of Zion Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to charity of one’s choice. Shiva will be observed at the home of Joel’s daughter, Phyllis Gentile, from 5 to 8 Monday January 6th until Sunday January 12th 2014 at 144 Howard Avenue Tappan NY 10983. Arrangements are under the direction of Hellman Memorial Chapels.
