Mrs. Marianne Selma Kagan, a long-time resident of Rockland County, New York passed away peacefully with family by her side, on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, in Palisades, New York. Marianne was born on April 8, 1931 in Berlin, Germany and emigrated with her parents, Julius and Charlotte Krombach to the United States in 1939 after living all over Europe to escape and survive the Holocaust. Marianne and her parents eventually settled in Syracuse, NY where she met the love of her life, Harry Kagan who predeceased her in 2016. They were married for over 64 years. Before settling in Pearl River, NY, when Harry started his teaching career at Clarkstown South High School, Marianne traveled the world as an Air Force wife with her husband. Later in life she studied to become a licensed practical nurse and worked at Nyack Hospital. She was not only the president of her high school sorority but was also the president of her nursing school class. Marianne loved life and encouraged everyone else to do so.
Marianne is survived by her daughter Debra and her husband, Luke Birkeland and their son Benjamin Birkeland of Nyack, NY ; her son Mark and his wife Christina Kagan and their five sons, Andrew, Nicholas, Ashten, Max and Aaron of Kingsland, TX; her sister Evelyn and her husband Jay Smith and their family of Sagle, ID and her step-sister Gretchen Huntley and her family of Gananoque, Ontario, Canada. She is also survived by her niece and nephew Dr. Ruth and Dr. Robert Shapiro and their family of NYC; and her nephew and niece, Dr. Victor Bers and Dr. Susan Bers and their family of Hamden, CT
Funeral Services for Marianne will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at 1:00 PM, at Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State Street, Spring Valley, New York. Interment will follow at Workmans Circle Cemetery, Brick Church Road and route 306, New Hempstead, New York. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State Street, Spring Valley, NY. 845-356-8600. Donations can be made in Marianne’s memory to Rockland Jewish Family Service, United Hospice of Rockland and the Hi Tor Animal Shelter of Rockland County, NY.
