As a young child growing up in suburban New York City in the 1940's I associated erudition and sophistication with my uncle who was a nationally reputed physician and an avid lover of classical music. My admiration for him inspired in me first a curiosity about classical music and then a love of it. But beginning then, and through the years since, it was the voice and presence of Marty Bookspan that informed what became a deep love of classical music.

I didn't dream that I would ever have the great fortune to meet -- much less get to know -- Marty. Through our friendship with Stan and Ruth Shapshay and Renee Rotta, we were honored to be in his presence during his recent summers at Tanglewood, and once in Aventura where we had the fun of sharing brunch at his favorite Sunday morning deli.

Most memorably, we were on hand for one of his Can You Stump Marty sessions at the Shapshays. At 90 years of age Marty had a perfect recall of each event in his long career, of the famous figures in the classical music scene who he met and whose music he enjoyed, and a beautifully profound appreciation of the music which was as alive and informed as ever.

It would be presumptuous of me to say that he was our friend. We could never expect a friend to give us what Marty was able to bring to our lives. We will always cherish the gift of his life.

Martin and Janet Bookspan were family friends from their Mt Vernon days. Marty’s voice on WQXR and music that followed created a lifetime passion for classic music for me. Martin Bookspan , brought honor to his profession and has left a good name”Z”L”
