The son of Hungarian-Jewish immigrants Marton and Grace Zilbermann, Milton was the fourth child and only son in a family that eventually settled in Bayonne, New Jersey. There, he grew up within a large, close-knit extended family whose members worked together for decades in the family clothing business, Silver Brothers.
Milton graduated from high school in Bayonne and continued his education at Rutgers University in Newark. In 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force, serving first in Japan and later in Korea. During his four years of service, he was assigned to a legal clerk and investigator position in the base JAG office in Tokyo, earning commendations for his work. After his discharge in 1952, he returned to Rutgers and completed a degree in business administration.
In 1954, Milton married Frances Nova. Together they lived in various towns in New Jersey and Connecticut before settling in Spring Valley in 1962, where they raised their four children. Frances taught high school English, and Milton built a long career in retail management, specializing in opening new clothing stores across the tri-state area. In his mid-fifties, he founded and operated his own bagel shop, working tirelessly to make it a success.
Music remained one of Milton’s lifelong passions, and he was an avid collector of vinyl recordings across many genres. After retiring, he and Frances traveled extensively and devoted much of their time to their children and grandchildren. Following Frances’s passing in 2015, Milton continued to live independently with characteristic resilience, supported by family and friends.
Milton Silber is remembered for his dedication to family, his strong work ethic, and a life anchored in loyalty, service, and love. He is survived by his children Steven, Andrea, Daniel, and Lawrence, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his memory with deep affection and gratitude.
