Nelson Lawrence Dworkin

He was born and raised in Bronx, NY by his parents, Joseph and Pearl Dworkin. Nelson was a very talented pianist in his younger days. He attended the High School of Music & Art in Manhattan, where he played piano and oboe. He later graduated from The City College of New York.

Nelson worked his entire career as Assistant Personnel Director for the City of New York Department of Personnel. He was a dedicated, hard worker for the city, and retired in 1995.

Nelson is survived by his son and daughter-in-law David and Meg, of Amherst, NH, and grandsons Jacob and Brian, and son and daughter-in-law Ira and Allyson, of Santa Monica, CA, and granddaughter Amanda.

Nelson was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Ione Dworkin, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage filled with love, laughter and countless memories. Nelson was a devoted husband and family man, a loving, caring father and grandfather, and friend to many. He and Ione took great joy in raising their children, and participating in the lives of their grandchildren. Nelson treasured his grandchildren, never missing a milestone in their lives. He and Ione would think nothing of traveling to see their family, whether it was a drive to New Hampshire or a cross-country flight to California. They were frequent attendees at baseball games, concerts, birthday parties and more.

Nelson was very close and cared deeply for our “second” family, Jeanne and Herb Fefferman, her children Andrea Caloras and Donna Sasson, and their families. He loved participating in their lives, always looking forward to attending birthday parties and religious celebrations, and attending important family events.

Nelson was a community leader. For many years, he served as president of his condominium. He was active until his death, serving on the condo board. He was admired and respected, offering his years of wisdom and guidance.

Nelson was always an avid animal lover. He and Ione adopted 3 dogs, helped local animals in need, and were generous in donating to local animal shelters and charities such as ASPCA. He felt strongly about giving back to the community, and contributed to many other charities through the years.

Funeral services will be Wednesday May 15, 2024 at Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State Street, Spring Valley NY, with burial to follow at Jewish Community Center Cemetery, at Brick Church Rd and Rte 306, Spring Valley NY.
