Norina Gertrude Ross, 87, passed away on September 3, 2026. She was born on January 25, 1939, in Paterson, New Jersey, and moved to Rockland County as a teenager, where she would spend the rest of her life and raise her family in New City, New York. She was widowed by her husband, Alex Ross.
Her family was an important part of her life. She loved her children, Alex, Seth, Andrew, and Heather, and was incredibly proud of them and the lives they built. She made sacrifices to give her children the opportunity to pursue higher education and took great pride in their careers and accomplishments. She was also a proud grandmother to Alex, Dylan, Olive, Emma, Jessicah, and Gabe, a great grandmother to Summer, Benny, Scarlett and she cherished her relationship with each of them.
Norina dedicated her life to caring for others through her career as a nurse. She earned her nursing degree at the age of 20 and, never one to stop learning, went on to earn her bachelor’s degree at 40. Her work was a reflection of the compassion and determination that were such an important part of who she was. Her final position was at St. Vincent’s, where she worked in an outpatient rehabilitation program.
She loved her homes in Andes and New City, each holding its own memories and meaning. She also loved getting away and spending time at the Jersey Shore, where she enjoyed swimming and being in the water.
Norina will be remembered in all the little things that made her who she was: her love of books and poetry, her strong opinions and thoughtful conversations, her friendships, her love of the water and horses, her homes in Andes and New City, and, most of all, her devotion to her family.
Norina is survived by her children, Alex, Seth, Andrew, and Heather, and her six grandchildren, Alex, Dylan, Olive, Emma, Jessicah, and Gabe.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. We will miss her voice, her stories, her opinions, her poetry, and all the conversations we thought we would have for years to come.
