

Mark David Pickenstein, 71, of Springboro, OH passed into heaven on December 4, 2020 at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He was born on April 6, 1949, son of the late Joseph & Margaret (Hunt) Pickenstein in Uhrichsville, Ohio.
Mark was the oldest of three siblings. He was preceded in death by sister, Jo Ann Hayes. Leslie (Richard) McNeely, his sister, is his only surviving sibling along with a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.
Mark is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 45 years, Mary Ann (Rolfsen) Pickenstein.
A graduate of Claymont High School, 1967, Mark then attended Oxford University in Oxford, England; Kent State University in Kent, Ohio; and graduate programs at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mark had a natural aptitude for foreign languages and became competent in several languages.
Mark spent his entire career serving the United States of America. Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5) Pickenstein was drafted into the U.S. Army Intelligence career field in 1973. His 30 year military career included the Defense Investigative Service (DIS) in Cincinnati, OH and DIS Headquarters, Washington, D.C. He spent 22 years in the Defense Attache System (DAS). His tours included Belgrade, Yugoslavia; Budapest, Hungary; New Delhi, India; Athens, Greece; Warsaw, Poland; Bonn, Germany; and Stuttgart, Germany.
On August 5, 2008 Mark was inducted into the Defense Attache Hall of Fame. This Hall of Fame was established to honor DAS personnel who have served with great distinction and made unique contributions to our nation. He was assigned as Chief Army Attache Management Division which allowed for his extensive field experience and dedication to attache personnel to make an impact on the entire Defense Attache System. In May 2009 he was awarded the Claymont HS Foundation 11th Annual Alumni Award. This award is presented to an individual who demonstrated lifetime leadership and abilities in his chosen field.
Mark was a lifelong learner and in retirement began in-depth study of the Holy Bible. His inquisitive mind and heart evolved into a deep faith. He was an adherent of Newspring Church and enjoyed challenging conversations during Wednesday Bible Study.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 11 at 12:30 p.m. at Newspring Church, 1150 S. Main St., Springboro, OH with Pastor Shannon Wooten officiating.
Burial at Springboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday at Newspring Church. Please wear masks and maintain social distancing.
