

He was born Feb. 21, 1939 in Willimantic, CT, the son of Alvin and Barbara (Stone) Goodfield. He earned his PhD in Geology from the University of Illinois in 1966.
Alan worked for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation, Bridges and Structures for many years, retiring in 2002. He was active in several geological societies throughout his professional career.
Alan was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where he served on various boards and committees. He sang in the choir and attended the Bible Breakfast group. He was supportive of the school assisting with the Outdoor Education Program and served many times as a chaperone and guide with George Krueger on canoe trips to the Boundary Waters of Minnesota.
Surviving are his wife Shari, his two daughters: Cathi Copelin and Heather (Matthew) Stevens both of Springfield, seven grandchildren: John (Jessica) Gottschalk Jr, Nicole Copelin, Dalton (Amanda) Copelin, Ashley Stevens, Cassie Wassell, Caleb Stevens, Lucas Stevens, his goddaughter, Bailey Wassell, and his brother, Dana (Kathy) Goodfield of Conway, MA. His parents preceded him in death.
Cremation Rites were accorded by the Bisch Crematory.
Memorial Visitation and Service: The Goodfield family will greet family and friends at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 2645 Old Jacksonville Rd., Springfield, IL. Monday, Nov. 7 from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Joshua T. Traxel will officiate. Inurnment will be in Chatham Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and School, 2645 Old Jacksonville Rd., Springfield, IL 62704.
