

Albert J. "Candy Man" McGlennon, 88, of Springfield, died at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at his home. Albert was born January 13, 1921 in Springfield, the son of Thomas John and Mary Lay McGlennon. He married Lena Marie Williams; she preceded him in death in 1991. Albert was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He received the American Defense Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, 3 Bronze Battle Stars and 3 Overseas Service Bars. He retired as a delivery man for Young's Appliance. In his earlier years, Albert worked at Hummer Manufacturing Company in Lincoln and was a tour guide at the Lincoln Tomb. Albert was a great supporter of the arts locally. He enjoyed attending performances of the Decatur Park Singers, and at the Kirkland Fine Arts Center, Sullivan Theater of the Arts and the New Salem Country Opera. He was known as the "Candy Man" because he passed out candy after every performance of the Decatur Park Singers and to anyone he met. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jenny McGlennon Turasky; two brothers, Raymond and Edward McGlennon and one sister, Mary Catherine McGlennon. He is survived by a son, David (wife, Sheila) McGlennon of Kankakee; eleven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a special friend, Loretta; several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St., Springfield with Rev. Msgr. Thomas Holinga celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be performed by the Department of Defense. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan B.
