He was born December 1, 1912 in rural Altamont, Illinois; the son of Wilhelm A. F. Wolff and Helen Marie Proefrock Wolff. He married Mildred Emilie Jagow on April 30, 1939 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Parsonage in Altamont. They were married for 60 years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, “Millie”, February 5, 1999 and his son, Richard, May 20, 1996.
After returning from service in the U.S. Army during WWII, Mr. Wolff was employed in Springfield by several stores before becoming a U.S. Post Office clerk in 1946; retiring from there in June, 1977 after 31 years of service. Al also had his own tax preparation business for 40 years.
Continuing with his tax practice was not enough to keep him busy so, in 1978 Al embarked on his next 30 years of service as a volunteer to seniors like himself, at The Senior Center in Springfield and at St. John’s Hospital, 3rd Age Living. There he helped with many and varied jobs including income tax preparation and the multitude of Medicare paperwork facing seniors.
In those 30 years of service, Al served as a board member for several organizations and as a volunteer tax preparer for the Internal Revenue Service just prior to the April 15th filing deadlines.
Al truly “retired” in April, 2010, at the age of 97, returning to his hometown birthplace for some much deserved rest and relaxation at Lutheran Care Center, an assisted living facility in Altamont. After failing health, Al returned to Springfield April, 2013 where he was cared for by caregivers: Nancy Kauffold and Sheryl Murphy. Al was fortunate to have the most kind and loving care anyone could hope for. His family is greatly indebted to both Nancy and Sheryl.
Al is survived by daughter-in-law, Janet (Wolff) Foster (husband Doug) of Rochester; two grandchildren, Stacy Zinnen and Jeffrey Wolff (wife Storm) of Springfield; three great-grandchildren, Myranda & Hannah Wolff and Austin Zinnen; and his sister, Florence Seales of Altamont. In addition, Al is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins and several great-great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
