Alfred ''Smokey'' Allen Childers, 76, of Springfield, formerly of Waverly, passed away at 4:26 p.m. Monday, November 26, 2001 at his residence. Alfred was born October 31, 1925 the son of Ben Childers & Katie Childers - Gillis in Waverly. Mr. Childers was the owner and operator of Childers Tree Service, from which he retired. He was also a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific Theater. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: James Allen Childers on October 1977; one sister: Marie Neal and one brother: Orville Childers. He is survived by one son: John Robert Childers of Springfield; two daughters: Starlet S. Smith of Springfield and Terri K. Stone of Memphis, TN; two sisters: Mary Reynolds of Palmyra, IL. and Louise Childers of Chicago, IL. ; ten grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2001 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Reverend Scott Brindley officiating. The Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will perform Military Honors.
