Ann E. Layton, 86, a life-long resident of Springfield, died at 2:25 a.m., Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Villa Health Care Center East, Sherman. She was born Feb. 5, 1916, in Springfield, the daughter of James W. and Alice C. (Konrad) Layton. A 46-year employee of Illinois Bell Telephone, Miss Layton was a group chief operator in Springfield for many years, retiring in 1980. She served as a recruiter and trainer of operators in Chicago during a W.W. II shortage of operators. She was a parishioner of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church where she served as a vocalist and adult choir member beginning in the sixth grade. She attended grade school at both the Old St. Mary's Cathedral and the new Cathedral and Sacred Heart Academy. Miss Layton was a member of the Cathedral Altar and Rosary Society; St. Louise de Marillac Guild; Catholic Daughters of America; Te Deum of Springfield; Telephone Pioneers of America; AARP; and Route 66 Association of Illinois. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Alvin and Harriet Layton; William and Marcella Layton; and Robert Layton, all of Decatur. Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Alice C. Tipton (Virgil E. Tipton Jr.) of Springfield; Verna Layton, sister-in-law,of Decatur, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins and also several grand nephews and nieces, most of whom now either live in Decatur or a few of whom live elsewhere. Pallbearers are nephews Virgil Tipton III, St. Louis; James Tipton, Carol Stream; Thomas Tipton, Winfield; Robert Layton of Girard, and Jim Layton, of Decatur; and Bill Layton of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Decatur. All other nephews and nieces are honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, with prayer service at 6 p.m. led by Msgr. Kevin Vann. A private family rosary, led by Deacon Fred Straub, will be held at 3:30 p.m prior to visitation. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 3, at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, 524 East Lawrence Ave., Springfield, Rev. Monsignor John R. Ossola celebrant. Altar servers are grand nephews Zachary Layton, Matthew Bushell and Michael Bushell. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Kirlin, Egan and Butler Funeral Home at 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cathedral Grade school 815 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL 62703.
