Barker J. “Bud” Juhl, 96, of Largo, FL, formerly of Springfield, IL, died at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital in Bay Pines, FL, on January 5, 2025. Bud was born in Springfield on October 2, 1928, to Barker H. and Dorothy A. (Buckley) Juhl. Bud married L. Jane McCarrel in June of 1952 (later divorced), and they had three children, Judy, James, and Todd.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert J.; and children, Judy and Todd.
He is survived by his son, James; grandsons, Jeremy Hoelzel, Tyler Juhl and Cody Juhl; as well as several nieces; one nephew; and caregiver and friend, Ligaya (“Lily”) Evans.
Bud graduated from Springfield High School in December of 1947, attended Springfield Junior College until volunteering for the Air Force Pilot Training Program in December of 1949, and subsequently received a B.S. degree from the University of Omaha in 1966. Bud served as a jet fighter pilot in the Korean War and as a bomber pilot in the Strategic Air Command following the war.
Bud retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel in 1966, and subsequently worked for the State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, until his retirement from there, after which he and Jane moved to the St. Petersburg, FL area.
Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg, IL. Military Honors will be provided by U.S. Air Force and Menard County Honor Guard.
The family is being served by Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 S. Grand Ave. West, Springfield.
