Betty R. Hurwitz

Betty Rose Hurwitz, 96, of Springfield, passed away on February 25, 2024 at her residence. She was born on September 21, 1927 in Springfield to Joseph Greenberg and Mary Mandel Greenberg. Betty married Ralph Sidney Hurwitz on April 10, 1949 and he preceded her in death on October 18, 2023.

Mrs. Hurwitz is survived by one son Joe (Anna) Hurwitz of Springfield, four grandchildren: Mary “Mimi” (Katie) Hurwitz, Jake (Amber) Hurwitz, Henry (Kelly) Hurwitz and Michael (Kayla) Hurwitz all of Springfield, and nine great-grandchildren: Albert “Albie” Hurwitz, Hudson, Aubrey and Chloe Hurwitz, Charlie Tinsley, Willow and Lola Hurwitz, Theo and Lily Hurwitz. She was preceded in death by two daughters: Mary Jean Hurwitz and Lynn Hurwitz-Jackman, one brother Aaron Greenburg and two sisters: Dorothy Smith and Ida Victor.

Betty graduated from Springfield College in Illinois. She met her husband Ralph in 1947 at Temple B’rith Sholom and they were married 74 years. Betty was especially proud of her Jewish heritage and her involvement was important as well. She served on many boards including the Springfield Jewish Federation, Temple B’rith Sholom where she served as President, Springfield Art Association, Liturgical Arts, Girl Scouts of America, American Cancer Society where she served as Chairman of the City Wide Annual Drive, was a member of Sisterhood and Brandeis University of Women, life member of Hadassah, Charter Member of CSS Sorority and was on the board of the International Services Agency. She was a life member of Temple B’rith Sholom.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday February 27, 2024 at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen Street, with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
