

Betty Ruth Walker, 89, of Springfield, formerly of Carbondale and Zeigler, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Regency Care Assisted Nursing Facility. She was born November 21, 1926, in Herrin to Robert and Bessie Jones Walker. She was preceded in death by her brothers Lumus Earl and Charles Robert Walker. Betty worked at the Illinois Baptist State Association as a secretary, and was promoted to an administrative assistant and finally as the director of printing and mailing before retiring after 42 years of service. Betty was an active member of the Springfield Southern Baptist Church, serving on the Missions and Pastor Search committees. She was active in Sunday School and used her personable hospitality skills to welcome church members and guests to Worship. She loved people and looked upon all as her brothers and sisters in Christ. She volunteered as a Samaritan at St. John�s Hospital for many years. Betty enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona and traveling. Betty will be greatly missed by her nephew, Larry Walker of Bridgeton, MO; cousins and many friends. Visitation will be held from 4pm until the time of the funeral ceremony at 6pm, Thursday, April 28 at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL, 62629, with Dr. Michael J. Keppler officiating. Burial will be at the Masonic/Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton at 1pm, on Friday, April 29th.
