Dr. Trumbo was a nationally and internationally recognized expert in many areas of Statistics. He was the author/coauthor of two books on statistics and probability, pioneered several methods of computer presentation in the field and taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics over the span of 7 decades. He retired just 2 years ago, but continued to teach via internet websites dedicated to the field of statistics.
He spent nearly all of his teaching career at CSUEB (California State University East Bay, formerly known as CSCH and CSUH) where he helped develop the Statistics Department in its early days, served on numerous department and university committees, was instrumental in developing the university’s evening class program, earned numerous awards and mentored many students.
Dr. Trumbo also served as the Program Director for Statistical Research for three terms at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Washington D.C for the Division of Mathematical Science. Although offered a permanent position at NSF, he chose to return each time to what he loved most-- teaching. He was a fellow of both the America Statistical Association (ASA) and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). He was a recipient of the ASA Founders Award and the IMS Carver Medallion and served as the editor of the Current Index of Statistics (CIS).
Bruce Trumbo attended Springfield High School, Knox College in Galesburg, IL, and earned his doctorate at the University of Chicago. He worked during summer breaks from college at Sangamo Electric Company in Springfield and was involved in the very early computer projects at that time. He continued his interest in computers through the years, learned several computer languages and pioneered new ways of representing statistical data through color mapping.
He is survived by his sisters, Elaine Trumbo-Roberts (Nathan Paul) of Sikeston, MO and Ellen Trumbo of Lacey, WA; an uncle, Christian Andreasen (Elaine) of Half-Moon Bay, CA; nephews Carl and Eric Hellyer; grandniece MyKyna Meseraull and several cousins.
