Carl was born on June 16, 1948, in Taylorville, Illinois, he was the son of Eugene and Mary (Tanner) Michel.
On June 28, 1969, Carl was united in marriage to Shirley Floyd in Edinburg, Illinois. They shared over 54 years of marriage at the time of his passing.
Carl grew up working on the family farm with his dad and grandpa. He then went on to establish several construction companies where he laid brick and block. Most notably, Carl owned and operated C & M Concrete and Michel Concrete where he poured foundations throughout Illinois and Iowa, leaving a legacy of concrete construction work. Carl also had the pleasure of working alongside his son on his own farm, raising corn and soybeans and installing drainage tile until his retirement in 2020. Never one to slow down, Carl continued to work after retirement by helping out at his son’s gas dock, Pointe Oasis, at the Lake of the Ozarks. Carl loved to be outdoors and had many hobbies including fishing, trap shooting, hunting, boating, and walking his dog. He loved to travel, and he often piloted his own plane to take his wife and family between their homes in Missouri and Florida.
Carl’s greatest joy in life was his family. Carl was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He will truly be missed by all who loved and knew him.
Carl is survived by his wife, Shirley Michel of the home; son, Scott Michel (Courtney) of Sunrise Beach, Missouri; daughters, Mary Wilson (Jeff) of Sunrise Beach, Missouri and Deborah Fischer (Christopher) of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois; grandchildren, Phillip Wilson (Cailey), Valerie Degitz (Austin), Sarah Wilson, Abigail Wilson, Alexandra Calderisi (Joe), Ashleigh Fischer, Aidan Fischer, Ava Fischer, Arianna Fischer, Colton Michel, Conrad Michel, and Crue Michel; great-grandchildren, Finn and Luca Wilson; brothers, Paul Michel (Maureen) of Burlington, Iowa and Bruce Michel of Taylorville, Illinois; and sisters, Frances Oros of Marion, Illinois, Cynthia Simmons (Merle) of Mount Auburn, Illinois, and Karen Yeaman (Bob Brandis) of Taylorville, Illinois.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Mary Michel.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm with a short service to follow from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a contribution be made in Carl’s honor to Tunnel to Towers Foundation at t2t.org.
