

He was born in Springfield, IL, on August 9, 1948. He was the son of Francis G. and F. Velma (Lowe) Sprinkel. He married Sandra Jo Burge on November 4, 1967, in Springfield.
Carl graduated from Feitshans High School in 1966, earned an associate’s degree at Lincoln Land Community College, bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sangamon State University. He served in the United States Army in the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He worked for the Springfield Police Department for 27 years. He loved working the overnight shift, spending over 20 years on it, retiring as the Watch Commander with the rank of Lieutenant.
He was a member of Trout Unlimited, American Legion, Fraternity Order of Eagles, and Illinois Police Association, where he served as a division chairman.
Carl was an avid fisherman who loved going catfishing with his brother. Trout fishing was his favorite pastime at Bennett Springs, MO, with his son and grandchildren. He loved reading and doing crossword puzzles. He was full of “useless knowledge.” Spending time with his family was important to him. He loved watching Fighting Illini Basketball and Football, attending many basketball games with his family over the years. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; and brother, Francis “Jerry” Sprinkel.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; two children, Christopher (Sharon) Sprinkel of Carlinville, IL, and Jennifer (Ken) Roth of Sherman, IL; grandchildren, Rebecca (Brandon) Hammann, Justin (Audrey) Sprinkel, and Ellie, Madeline, and Grace Roth; great-granddaughter, Caroline Hammann, and one expected great-granddaughter Sprinkel; brother, Charles (Linda) Sprinkel; sister-in-law, Bettie Sprinkel; and many other family members.
As a double lung transplant survivor of almost 10 years on September 7, 2016, Carl requests everyone to be an organ donor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the American Lung Association, Barnes Jewish Hospital St. Louis - Lung Transplant Program, S.P.A.R.C., or the charity of your choice.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield, followed by the ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with military honors provided.
