Catherine Marie Cummings

Catherine Marie Cummings, 96, of Springfield passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Heritage Manor. Marie was born March 11, 1915 in Mt. Auburn, IL, the daughter of Rolley and Erna Melissa Greer Garland. She married John R. Cummings on December 26, 1933 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylorville. He preceded her in death on December 8, 2002. Marie worked at an Ammunition Plant in Illiopolis during WWII. She later worked as a LPN at St. Vincent's Memorial Hospital in Taylorville and was also a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylorville. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves baseball fan and a Notre Dame football fan. She was also a dog lover, especially Boston Terriers. Marie was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Jack Cummings; grandson, Michael Cox, and twin brother, Bud Garland. She is survived by her daughter, Charlene (husband, Dean) Cox of Springfield; two grandchildren, Teresa Cravens of Springfield and Cheryl Sommer of Jacksonville; two great-grandchildren, Rebecca Nicole Sommer and Ryan David Sommer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2011 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos, Springfield with Rev. Robert Jallas, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
