

Charles J.”Charlie” Maurer, 80, of Quincy, formerly of Springfield, died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, January 23, 2003 at the Veteran’s Home in Quincy. Charles was born May 5, 1922 in Athens, IL, the son of Oscar A. and Mayme Ryan Maurer. Mr. Maurer was a graduate of Cathedral Boys High School. He retired in June 1987 from the State of Illinois Department of Central Management after 18 years. He also worked as security at the U.S. Post office in Springfield and at Sangamo Electric. Mr. Maurer was a United States Army veteran of WW II, serving as a surgical technician in India from March 1942 to January 1946. He received a Service Stripe, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Battle Star, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, WW II Victory Medal and four Overseas Service Bars. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph, one sister: Dorothy and one nephew, Richard. He is survived by one brother: Henry “Heinie” (wife, Rosemary) Maurer of Pleasant Plains and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Monday, January 27, 2003. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 27, 2003 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Reverend Peter Harman officiating. Burial will follow at Old Salem Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
