

Charles M. Werner, 89, of Chatham, died at 3:08 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at his home. Charles was born May 23, 1923 in Springfield, the son of Maurice and Florence Unger Werner. He married Peggy Meyer on May 22, 1948. She preceded him in death in 1994. He married Sharon McCormick in 1997. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William and Robert Werner. Charles was a graduate of Springfield High School. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army, having served overseas. He was awarded the Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon with two bronze battle stars, four overseas services bars and a good conduct medal. He was self-employed first as a general contractor and for 41 years as a Construction Inspector for the Federal Housing Administration. He was a member of St. Cabrini Catholic Church. Charles was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #364, where he was chairman of the KC BBQ for many years, served on the board, and was very instrumental in the building of the KC Hall. He was also a member of the American Legion Chatham Post. He enjoyed woodworking, singing, and dancing. He was an avid Illini and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; two sisters, Catherine and Betty Werner, both of Springfield; four children, Colleen (husband, Wes) Pierceall of Murray, KY, Cheryl (husband, David) Bice of Riverton, Charles (wife, Donna) Werner of Springfield, and Michael (wife, Teri) Werner of Overland Park, KS; three step-children, David McCormick of Springfield, Susan (husband, Brian) McDonald of Leroy, and Patrick McCormick of St. Louis, MO; a sister-in-law, Betty Ann Werner of Springfield; thirteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will conclude with a eulogy service at 7:00 p.m. Private graveside ceremonies will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
