

David George Marshall, 68, of Chatham, formerly of Jacksonville, passed away Monday, January 15, 2018 at St. Johns Hospital. He was born June 12, 1949 in Jacksonville to Harold Swain and Katie Barnes Overton Marshall. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Bobby Marshall. David graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1967; he received a BA from Illinois College with a Major in History and a Minor in English. He received a Learning Disabilities Certificate at Western Illinois University. David received his Masters Degree in Administration from Sangamon State University and furthered his studies in Spanish at Guadalajara, Mexico. David married Judy Elaine Waggener on July 16, 1977, at the First Christian Church in Jacksonville. Mr. Marshall had recently retired from Meredosia and Chambersburg, IL, in 2006 as an educator, principal, and administrator for many years. He began his teaching career at Garfield Elementary in Elgin, IL (5th Grade teacher and basketball coach); Winchester Elementary (5th Grade Teacher and basketball coach); Jacksonville Correctional Center (leisure time activities director); Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, (Dean of Students); Meredosia/ Chambersburg Jr./Sr. High School (LD Teacher, History/English teacher, Principal 15 years, Baseball Coach for Bluffs/Meredosia Jr. High); Lafayette Alternative School (after retirement). He enjoyed being around others, offering life lessons as a coach: Youth/American Legion Baseball, Elks Little League, and Jacksonville Area Baseball Leagues. David was a lifelong musician, singer and song writer, who played professionally in a band as a bass player and served as a music video producer in retirement. In the Springfield and Jacksonville area, he played in several rock bands such as Mark IV, Mark V, Consolidation, South Main Leather Shop, and Bogus Brothers. David loved Nashville, TN recording and music businesses. He won a National Songwriting contest for an original song and music lyrics, (Ill Be) Still Loving You. His legacy has been passed on through his sons who enjoy sports and music. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 40 years, Judy; sons Jared David Swain (wife Kristen) Marshall of Chatham, Jonathan Cody Andrew Marshall of Panama City, Florida, Gabriel Gabe Ross Johnson Marshall of Nashville, TN; precious grandchildren, Mason and Mya Marshall; sister, Marlene Marshall (husband Ron Wampler) of Springfield; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and many dear lifelong friends. Cremation rites will be accorded by Cremation Services of Central Illinois, Chatham, before all services. The family will greet friends at a memorial gathering on Saturday, January 20, from 5:30pm until the time of the memorial service at 7pm, at First Christian Church, 2106 South Main Street, Jacksonville, IL, 62650.
