Denny Smith

Born and raised in Olympia, Washington, Denny was the kind of person who never met a stranger. In fact, there wasn't a face in Olympia that didn't seem to know him. He was born on February 20, 1946, to Charles A. and Joyce H. (O'Neill) Smith.

Denny built a successful career in sales, spending most of his working years in Yellow Pages advertising before embracing the digital age with Google advertising. He had a gift for conversation, could sell just about anything, and usually left people smiling by the end of it.

For the first 45 years of his life, Denny lived life with one foot on the gas pedal. He loved spontaneous road trips, fast cars, boats, and never hesitated to buy the expensive bread because, in his mind, life was meant to be enjoyed.

Then Barbara Ann walked back into his life after the two had gone their separate ways following high school. Barbara came with what Denny lovingly referred to as "a couple of rotten kids," and without hesitation, he welcomed us as his own.

They were married in Reno in 2001, a wedding none of us will ever forget. Denny promised "for better or worse," and he meant every word. As Barbara's health declined over the years, he traded in carefree adventures for doctor's appointments and caregiving. He never complained. He simply showed up, every single day.

You could usually find Denny fishing, golfing, or simply taking a drive. The road always seemed to lead him to the water. He had a quick wit, an unforgettable sense of humor, and never missed an opportunity to tell a joke, especially if he thought someone needed a reason to smile.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Joyce Smith; the love of his life, Barbara; brother-in-law, Bob Casteel, and his beloved dog, Emily Monroe.

Denny is survived by his daughter, Beth (Damian) Lainfiesta of Chatham, formerly of Sumner, Washington; bonus daughter, Amy Roznowski; sons, Neal (Ryan) Grouell of Washington and Matt (Shannon) Morton of Puyallup, Washington; grandchildren, Jordan Davy, Robby Morton, Raeann Lainfiesta, and Harper Lainfiesta; bonus granddaughter, Serenity Roznowski; siblings, Brett (Kelly) Smith of Florence, Arizona, DeAnn Casteel of Olympia, Washington, and Sue Black of Lacey, Washington; dear friend, Laura Roznowski; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends whose lives were brighter because they knew Denny.

Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.

Ceremonies are being planned for a later date in Washington.
