

Dixie was born on September 8, 1921, in Green County, KY, the son of Robert Melton and Lula Belle Mays Marr. He married Margaret Eloise Paulen on September 18, 1943, at New Salem Methodist Church; she preceded him in death on September 29, 2015.
Dixie was a 1939 graduate of New Berlin High School. He was employed by Allis-Chalmers prior to starting farming in Sangamon County. Following retirement, he worked for the U.S. Security Association at Marine and Chase Bank for 10 years. He enjoyed traveling to the county fairs, 4-H shows, the IL State Fair and watching the Illini basketball team. Dixie also enjoyed his livestock, bowling in his younger years, and was well-known for his sweet corn patch. He was a Mason for 63 years, a member of the Divernon Lodge #1158, A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Sangamon County Farm Bureau. Dixie worked hard his whole life and those that knew him loved him.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, James Marr; brothers, Harold Milburn and Robert Marr; sister, Eva Fritsch; and daughter-in-law, Lois Marr.
He is survived by two sons, Garrett L. (Janet) Marr of Lenexa, KS and Robert Greg Marr of Arkansas; one daughter, Dixie Gayle (Kim) Leftwich of Decatur; four grandchildren, Margaret (Chad) Henderson of Encino, CA, Brittany (Bryan) Boes of Tyler, TX, Kristoffer (Lauren) Leftwich of Dallas, TX, Lyndsay (David) Paquette of Plano, TX; six great-grandchildren, Hayden and Grace Henderson, Lauren Harrison and Hayley, Zoelle, and Atticus Boes; one sister, Jean (husband, Tom; deceased) Dunlap of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 South Grand Avenue West, Springfield.
Memorial Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home with Pastor Roger McIntire officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
