Doris Aleta Farris, 100, of Springfield, died at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Heritage Manor Nursing Care Home. Doris was born April 22, 1909 in Castana, IA, the daughter of John and Jeanette Anne Springer Powers, they preceded her in death. She married Dail Farris on May 27, 1931; he preceded her in death in 1963. Doris attended Morningside College in Sioux City, IA and was a school teacher prior to her marriage. She later worked for many years as a "carder" at Weller Fishing Tackle Company in Sioux City. Doris was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Dorcas Society. She attended Island Grove Methodist Church in New Berlin. Her goal for the past few years was to reach the ripe old age of 100 years and she accomplished that on April 22, 2009. Most of the time prior to reaching her 100th birthday, she was very alert and agile and very independent. A fall in March of 2009 took away her independence and her zest for life. She will be missed. She is also preceded in death by a son, David Farris; four brothers, Robert, Sidney, Theodore and Lester Powers; and four sisters, Gladys Powers, Wilda Jessip, Margaret Powers and Ruth Olson. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Danner of New Berlin; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; five step-great-grandchildren; ten step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Edwards of Sioux City, IA; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Graveside ceremonies will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 2009 in Harrison Cemetery in Whiting, IA with Pastor Martha Anderson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Onawa, Iowa.
