

Edward J. "Ed" Ebel, 76, of Springfield, passed away at 3:55 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness. Ed was born March 6, 1940 in Springfield, the son of Charles Joseph and Mary Veronica Doyle Ebel. He married Sue Dudley at Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield. Ed graduated from Cathedral Boys High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Marketing from the University of Illinois-Champaign. Ed served in the Peace Corps in Africa for 2 years. He retired from the State of Illinois in the Department of Human Services in 2000. He was a skilled woodworker, talented landscaper, and an avid Illini football and basketball fan. He was preceded in death by his parents. Ed is survived by his wife, Sue, of Springfield; daughter, Stacey (Kevin) Rademacher of Sherman; five grandchildren, Jared Ebel, and Wade, Andrew, Jenna, and Nathan Rademacher; sisters, Pat (John) Dietrich of Springfield; Donna Conlon of Severna Park, MD; Mary Lou Nierhoff of Bloomington; and D.D. (Paul) Sullivan of Peoria; one aunt, Norma Doyle; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following ceremonies. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2016 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1720 South Grand Ave E., Springfield, with Rev. Scott Thelander celebrant. Private family burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
