

He was born on the island of Bocas del Toro in Panama on February 13, 1939, the son of Augusto Gutierrez and Sara Velarde. Ed married Kristal Perry in Pleasant Plains on May 26, 2001.
Ed moved to the United States after his mother’s marriage in Texas. There, he attended his early education and high school in San Antonio. Later, Ed earned his bachelor’s degree after his studies at Tulane University and Quincy College. He went on to work as a supervisor for the State of Illinois where he met his former wife, Marge. They also briefly lived in Arizona. Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a very talented artist and expressed his creativity through colorful sculptures and playing his guitar. Ed shared his talents by visiting local nursing homes with his friend, Mike, to sing and play the guitar. He also took great pride in teaching children his knowledge and craftsmanship of sculpting to help them create their own wood sculptures. Ed’s love for travel led him to a memorable hike through the Grand Canyon with Mike. On his most recent trip, Ed went to Spain to visit the Velarde family castle. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed learning about history. Above all, Ed treasured his family, and the time spent with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eustacia Vidal; and brothers, Augusto, George, and Hannibal (Annita) Gutierrez.
Ed is survived by his wife, Kristal; first wife, Joyce, mother of Carlotta Moore of San Antonio, TX, Edward Job of Chicago, and Gabriel Job; second wife, Marge Higgins, mother of Sarah (Chris) Groth; stepchildren, Edna and John Brazaitis; grandchildren, Dexter and Benjamin Groth, Truman, Carson, and Margaret Job, Carson and Sydney Moore, and Elaine and Henry Job; nephews, Shaun and Rodrigo Gutierrez; niece, Annie; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Memorial Gathering and Memorial Ceremony: Family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home- Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, until the time of the Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. with Celebrant Judy Woerner.
