Elmer F. Requarth, 90, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday June 21, 2014 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born on May 20, 1924 in Pawnee to Earl F. and Elsie P. Halford Requarth. Elmer married Catherine Kunz Van Fossan in Springfield on October 10, 1987 and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters: Myra “Jean” (Phillip) Leib of New Jersey, and Phyllis A. (Frank) Terrell of North Carolina, one son Frederick “Rick” Requarth of Springfield, one granddaughter, one grandson, and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his daughter Dale Requarth, one grandchild Sam Leib, three sisters, one brother, and his stepson Frank Van Fossan.
Elmer was a US Marine Corp Veteran who entered service on November 11, 1943, left for overseas in June of 1944, and saw action in Guam and Iwo Jima. On March 10, 1945 he was wounded on Iwo Jima and was awarded the Purple Heart. Elmer was also awarded two Bronze Stars and a Presidential Citation. Mr. Requarth retired from Booth and Thomas Inc. after thirty nine and one half years of service, and he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Wednesday June 25, 2014 at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen Street, with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00pm-7:00pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
