

Esther L. Cheatle, MD., 95, of Springfield, IL (formerly of Oak Park, IL) passed away on February 25, 2011. Born 12/14/15, an only child and preceded in death by parents, Edwin L. and Augusta D. Cheatle. Former wife of, but always best friend to, George D. Olson, deceased. Lifelong friend and mentor to Michael A. Wachala.
Dr. Cheatle earned a B.A. in Photography while attending Ripon College of Wisconsin. During mid-life, she accomplished her goal of becoming a Pathologist by graduating from The Women’s College of Philadelphia. She completed her medical internship and residency at Wesley Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Cheatle practiced medicine as a Pathologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital. In the mid-1970s, she pursued the opportunity to practice at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield until her retirement in 1984. During her tenure as a professor at the above mentioned institutions, Dr. Cheatle published many pathology-related articles. Dr. Cheatle was also a member of the Sangamon County Medical Society and College of Pathologists.
A breast cancer survivor, Dr. Cheatle was a tough, independent woman of many talents and interests. She pursued her hobbies throughout her life. An accomplished photographer with public exhibitions of her work, she also held Master Gardener status. She was a lifelong puppeteer and very proud of designing and creating her own ensemble of marionettes. She performed puppetry throughout the Midwest and was a member of Puppeteers of America.
An avid outdoors enthusiast, she took great pleasure in backpacking, portaging, and canoeing throughout the Boundary Waters and Ontario, Canada. Dr. Cheatle pursued these activities well into her seventies. Always willing to share her skills and knowledge, she also designed and sewed her own tents and backpacks.
Dr. Cheatle was very passionate about education. As a believer in “paying it forward”, she helped mold the lives of many.
A memorial service will be held for Dr. Cheatle at Bisch & Son Funeral Home, 2931 S. Koke Mill Road, Springfield on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Bisch West is in charge of arrangements. Cremation will be accorded. Interrnment will follow in Willow Hills Memorial Park, 9100 Archer Avenue, Willow Springs, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the name of Dr.Esther L. Cheatle to the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine or the Animal Protective League (APL) or to the charity of your choice.
