Fran was born on May 25, 1924, in Springfield, to parents Ubaldo and Nellie Donini. She married the love of her life, Frank “Chris” McCue, on October 22, 1949, in Springfield.
Fran was raised in Springfield along with her two sisters. She attended St. Patrick’s grade school and Feitshans High School. After graduation, she worked at Illinois Bell Telephone before starting a career in cosmetology. Fran was initially a beautician at Jim’s Laketown, but later transitioned to working from home after her husband added a beauty shop to the back of their long-time residence on Stanton Avenue.
Fran and Chris never had children of their own, but they lovingly supported and cared for twenty-seven first nephews and nieces–attending every birthday, graduation, play, and madrigal dinner on the calendar. Always a generous and fun-loving couple, they hosted endless holiday gatherings and parties for friends and family. They traveled the world together and brought many of their nieces and nephews on these trips, forging unforgettable memories along the way. They met lifelong friends over the course of their travels, but that was natural for Fran–she could meet friends anywhere she went. Whether it was a long flight to Ireland or a simple trip to the grocery store, she was likely to strike up a conversation with someone and form an instant bond.
Fran was an ardent Notre Dame fan who also had a fondness for unwinding with an occasional trip to the casino or her favorite tavern, Spammy’s. Her spaghetti sauce was so good that, among family, it became a form of currency in return for services rendered. She was active well into her nineties and could be found mowing the lawn despite the protests of her family. She was a dedicated volunteer at the St. Joseph’s Home gift shop and Little Flower Church where she also participated in the “Young at Heart” social group. Following some health complications, Fran moved to Concordia Lutheran Village in February of 2024. To no one’s surprise, she quickly earned a reputation among the staff as a true character.
She was a loving wife, sister, and aunt to many. Those who knew her will forever crack a smile when they think of her stories, witty comments, and infectious laugh.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris; and sister, Helen Richardson.
She is survived by her sister, Kathryn Refine; and a host of nieces and nephews.
