

Frank W. Mertz, 88, of Springfield, died on October 17, 2008 at Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. Frank was born January 7, 1920 in Springfield, the son of Joseph and Mary Ellman Mertz. He married Evelyn Ramey on January 10, 1942 in Missouri. After graduating high school, Frank proudly served his country in the Army Air Force for 4 years. He was a talented musician who played the saxophone and clarinet with various bands and the Springfield Municipal Band for many years in and around Springfield. He was employed at Sangamo Electric and the Department of Transportation. He was a member of St. Cabrini Church and American Legion Post 32. Frank enjoyed music, fishing, and gardening and was especially proud of his roses. Most importantly, Frank was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Carl, and John Mertz; and his sisters, Catherine Mertz, Frances Karlicheck, and Theresa Kenner. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Evelyn of Springfield; his children, Mary Ann (husband, Don) Lepper of Rochester, Sharon Elaine (husband, Jim) Dolan of Blue Springs, MO, Frank L. Mertz of Riverton, Carol Lynn (husband, David) Foltz of Rochester, and Susan Ellen Mertz of Springfield; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2008 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Chiola officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
