

Fred James Wassell, 94, of Springfield, passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. Fred was born on April 11, 1924 in Springfield, the son of Fred James and Mary Eva Hagel Wassell. He was a graduate of Springfield High School and earned his masters degree from ISU. Fred held a 47-year career as a teacher for New Berlin High School. He was active in the theater arts community with the Muni Opera and a member of the Theatre Guild. He was also a substitute organist for several Catholic churches in the area and a member of the Springfield Symphony Choir. Freds greatest passion was caring for his dogs. He also loved convertibles and always made sure he owned one. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Wassell; and three brothers, Harold, Donald, and James Wassell. He is survived by four nieces, Peggy (husband, Edgar) Zellmann of San Diego, CA, Janet (husband, Michael) Kroeger of Omaha, Nebraska, Renee Wassell of Springfield, and Vicki (husband, Jess) McCullough of Springfield; five nephews, Robert (wife, Jo) of Springfield, James (wife, Sharon) of Little Rock, AR, Randy (wife, Carol) of Colorado, Thomas of Florida, and David Wassell of Texas; sister-in-law, Nancy (Jack) Phillips of Springfield; and many great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and his beloved dog, Caesar. Memorial Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 South Walnut St., Springfield with Rev. Jeff Grant, celebrant. Burial will be held at a later date at Calvary Cemetery.
