Dr. George R. "Bob" Long Jr.

He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, March 18, 1937, the son of George R. and Dorothy I. Ball Long Sr. He graduated from Morton Memorial High School in Knightstown, IN and then earned his under graduate degree from Indiana University. He went on to earn his masters and then his PhD of Bio-Chemistry from Purdue University.

Dr. Long married Alice Jo Stowder and she preceded him in death February 12,1996. He then married Bonnie Sutton in Springfield in 1997 and she survives.

Also surviving are his two daughters, Jennifer (Mark) Leckrone of Chatham, IL and Diane Long of Minneapolis, MN, a step-daughter, Jennifer (Colby) Buckman of Greater Detroit Metro Area, MI, a step-son James (Amie) Barnard Jr., of Springfield, four grandchildren; Joshua, Melissa, Andrew, Leckrone and Haley Barnard, a great granddaughter, Hillarie Peck Leckrone, and a brother, Dr. Michael (Belle) Long MD of San Diego, CA

He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother Ted Sing and a sister Margo Sing.

Dr. Long was an educator and taught for 36 years. He was a professor and department chair of Chemistry and Biology at Lincoln Land Community College for 26 years retiring in 1996. He was also the owner of Longs Auto Sound in Springfield for many years.

He was an avid golfer and was a well know face at Bunn Golf Course for many years, helping out in various capacities. He had a passion for reading, gardening and was a member of MENSA.

Cremation Rites will be accorded by the Bisch Crematory. His family will host a memorial gathering on Tuesday October 16, 2012 from 4 pm until time of a memorial service at 6 pm at Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Rev. Vaughn Beeman will officiate. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
