

George W. Murray, 93, a lifelong resident of Springfield, passed away at his home Friday, April 19, 2013 surrounded by his family.
He was born in Springfield, September 7, 1919 the son of Paul Eugene and Lena Mae (Clotfelter) Murray. He married Flora Dunham August 26, 1944 and she preceded him in death December 12, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Edna Jiminson, Wilma Dudda, Florence Murray, and Francis Murray
George proudly served his country in the United States Army from August 27, 1941 to November 2, 1945. He earned the American Defense Medal, the American Theater Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. George was a participant of the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
Upon returning from his military service, he worked as a Die Setter for Fiat Allis (formerly Allis Chalmers). George retired in 1980.
He was a member of Southside Christian Church. He was an avid sports enthusiast serving as a Youth Baseball Coach for both the Koury League and Pony Leagues. He played fast pitch softball for many years. George was a fan of the University of Illinois, St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Bulls. In early years, he enjoyed hunting. George was well known for his meticulously manicured lawn and gardens.
Surviving are his children; Carol (husband Norm) Smith of Springfield, and Paul (wife Cindy) Murray of Chicago, IL. 3 grandchildren; Brent (wife Mindy) Smith of Peosta, IA, Erik and Ariel Murray of Chicago, 2 great grandchildren; Megan and Joey Smith, a brother-in-law, Alfred Dudda of Springfield, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. where the family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Monday, April 22, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am Tuesday April 23, 2013 at the funeral home with Rev. John Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
