

George Sabo, 97, of Springfield, died at 10:44 a.m. on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Villa Health Care East. George was born February 19, 1913 in Springfield the son of Joseph and Barbara Tomancsek Sabo. He married Erma Furlich on July 6, 1935 in Decatur. She preceded him in death in 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Christopher D. Sabo; an infant sister, Elizabeth Sabo; two sisters, Catherine Mitch and Ann Schroeder; and two brothers, Joe and Paul Sabo. George had formerly been employed as a painter by area auto dealerships and body shops and retired in 1978 from the Illinois Dept. of Transportation. He was a charter member of Christ the King Catholic Church and a member of the POLKA Club and their exhibition dance team. He is survived by two sons, George M. (wife, Elaine) Sabo of Jonesboro, LA and Larry W. (companion, Kim Masters) Sabo of Petersburg; one daughter, Sharon Kirberg of Springfield; three grandchildren, Jeffrey K. Kirberg of Springfield and Scott A. (wife, Sylvia) Kirberg of San Jose, CA., and Tara Jo Beekman of Virden; four great-grandchildren; his siblings, Carl (wife, Rita) Sabo, Betty Tarr, and Carolyn Daley all of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Family will receive friends from 5:00 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 2010 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
