

Gilbert P. Miers, 87, of Springfield, died at 3:40 a.m. on Saturday, June 09, 2007 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born on November 29, 1919 in Carlinville, the son of Frederick and Zadel McCann Miers. He married Marcella Tobin in 1940 in Jacksonville, Illinois; she preceded him in death in 1982. Gilbert was a WWII Veteran. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre Organization, 28th Division, 109th Infantry, Company E and fought in three major battles. Gilbert retired from Pillsbury Mills in 1981 after serving for thirty-seven years as a millwright. He loved going to MCL Cafeteria, tending to his yard and Illini sports, especially football. He was also preceded in death by two sons: Ronald G. J. Miers and James M. Miers. He is survived by his daughter: Janet (husband, Stephen J., III) Madden of Springfield; five grandsons: Kirt Miers, Stephen Madden, Derek Madden, Glenn Madden and Damon Miers; one great-granddaughter; one great great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2007 at Kirin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m., with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz officiating. Funeral Ceremonies will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at Christ the King Church, 1930 Barberry Lane, Springfield, with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville where the Combined Veterans Ceremonial Team will perform military honors.
