Greg was born in Springfield, December 29, 1949, the son of Robert J. and Emma F. (Durkin) Lofy. His parents preceded him in death.
Greg attended Little Flower School and then graduated from Griffin High School (now Sacred Heart-Griffin), where he lettered in golf. Greg continued his education at SIU Edwardsville.
Greg dedicated many years of service to the U.S. Postal Service in Springfield, primarily at the Cook Street Office. He was known for his kind personality, infectious smile, and genuine care for both his coworkers and the customers he served. Education and lifelong friendships were deeply important to Greg, and the friendships he formed as early as kindergarten remained a cherished part of his life.
Those who knew Greg well knew of his deep love for sports. He played in numerous golf leagues, including at Edgewood Country Club in Auburn, and enjoyed traveling to other courses, including trips to Florida and Biloxi, Mississippi. Golf was a passion he shared with his family, who often joined him on the course. Greg proudly achieved three holes-in-one, and perhaps more.
Greg also enjoyed watching baseball—any game would do—but his favorite team was the Pittsburgh Pirates. Most of all, the sporting events he treasured most were those played by his grandsons. In his quieter moments, Greg enjoyed reading, gardening, planting flowers, bird watching, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Above all else, he cherished time spent with his family.
Surviving are his daughter Alison Buecker and Son, Philip Lofy both of Springfield, his two sisters, Trudy (Chuck) Best of Chatham, IL and Sue Bensko of Mt. Pulaski, IL two grandsons; Satchmo and Hodgeson Buecker both of Springfield, three nieces; Michele, Lisa and Nicole, and his nephew, Michael.
Cremation rites will be accorded, and a celebration of Greg’s life is being planned. The date, time, and place will be announced.
Arrangements are in the care of Bisch and Son Funeral Home. 217-544-5424
